Dr Peta Interview
Can you tell us a bit about your background and Medical career before joining Your Doctor Jobs?
I am a GP and prior to locuming with Your Doctor Jobs I was working in a regional area in a general practice and as a VMO at the local hospital.
What motivated you to explore locum opportunities through Your Doctor Jobs?
I was keen to experience different locations and workplaces and I felt that working as a locum was the ideal way to do this.
Who is your Recruitment Consultant and how long have you been working together?
I have been working with Justin for several years now. Justin has been excellent to work with. Due to circumstances, I am currently taking a break from locum life, however, I do look forward to doing more locum work with Justin and his team again.
What kind of support and guidance have you received from your Consultant whilst arranging placements?
Justin has been excellent at organising my locum work and liaising with health services and ensuring my accommodation and travel are organised. Any issues or problems that arise are promptly sorted out by Justin and there is no stress from my end.
Could you describe some of the specific roles and placements that you have worked through Your Doctor Jobs?
I have worked in GP fast-track clinics and correctional health.
What location has been the most rewarding for you. Either personally or professionally and why?
During the covid pandemic I was in Tasmania. It was the best place to be a locum during the pandemic. Prior to this, I also did a short stint in Nelson Bay which was a really lovely spot.
Can you share any tips or insights into how to succeed as a locum Doctor in todays healthcare environment for any Doctors who may be considering locum work for the first time?
Being able to adapt quickly to new people, workplaces and processes is helpful when working as a locum.
Have you experienced any unforeseen difficulties on any of your placements and how were these challenges handled by Your Doctor Jobs?
Not really, I have had a smooth run. Your Doctor Jobs has ensured this.
Other than your toothbrush, when travelling to a new placement, what are 3 things that you could never forget to pack and take with you?
Toothpaste, PJs, sunglasses
If you are working in a rural and remote area, how do you pass the down time whilst not working?
In my experience rural locations are very friendly and welcoming places. I have been fortunate to meet colleagues and locals who are always willing to take you on a tour of the local area or go out for dinner. Being a locum is a great way to meet new people. Having said that, I also enjoy some downtime, so some quiet time away from normal daily life suits me.
What is one unforgettable experience that you would not have had, if you were not locuming?
Too many to list! I have fond memories of the many people I have worked with and places I have visited whilst working as a locum. However, I will never forget a local nurse taking me on a tour of a rural town in NSW during severe drought and seeing first hand, the impact of the drought on the animals. This gave me a real appreciation of the challenges faced by farmers and the impact the drought had on their mental health.
Lastly, we pride ourselves at being the best at what we do, but, in your opinion, what sets YDJ apart from other Recruitment agencies?
Your Doctor Jobs really makes an effort to get to know their doctors and Justin and his team are always available to assist. I look forward to continuing to work with Justin and his team.
