Catching up with Justin Smith, co-founder of Your Doctor Jobs, we unexpectedly start out at sea.
''I learned a lot from my time in the Navy. I got to see a good bit of Australia and New Zealand, which was amazing. My time in the military taught me self discipline and leadership. I worked in Communications, and my natural gift for the gab kind of naturally led me to recruitment,'' he says.
''I toured schools and universities recruiting - it got me thinking about how other people communicate, how to read people. That has been vital.''
''Your Doctor Jobs stands for three things: Trust, enthusiasm and hard work.''
Moving into his third year as head of Your Doctor Jobs' Australian operations, Justin has managed to carve out a brand in the competitive medical recruitment industry. Your Doctor Jobs combines what he's learned from his past experiences with sticking to some core principles.
''We stand for three things: Trust, enthusiasm and hard work. We apply that to our clients, candidates and I look for it in my staff too.''
Making mistakes is part of any job - but facing problem-solving with enthusiasm and hard work is part of what makes Your Doctor Jobs different.
Part of the Your Doctor Jobs difference is the commitment to these values, and to forging relationships that will be successful and fulfilling, not just convenient. Hard work plays a big role in the Your Doctor Jobs day-to-day - and it's not always a success.
''I've made plenty of mistakes - it's about owning them and meeting challenges head on. After I left the Navy, I worked my way up through a recruitment firm to a CEO position. Despite all the success I had there, I made mistakes. But those helped me make Your Doctor Jobs what it is today. Of course, it helps to make those mistakes with someone else's money!'' he laughs.
Committing to your values helps you deliver the best according to Justin.
For clients or doctors with a problem, it's simple: you face the problem and let them know you care.
Making mistakes these days is less of an issue for Justin - sticking to those core principles really does work.
''Sometimes you get doctors or clients contacting you at all hours with a problem. It mightn't be your fault - but own it anyway. Face the problem straight away, pick up the phone and let them know you care. That instantly makes the problem seem smaller for them,'' he says.
''This is where trust comes in. If they trust you will fix the problem, the working relationship becomes easier. And enthusiasm kicks in too - no matter what was going on before your call, you need to be high energy on the phone. It's infectious, and helps immediately.''
He is also at pains to talk about accuracy of expectations - what you hear is definitely what you get with Justin. Part of Your Doctor Jobs' success is honesty about what can be delivered.
Justin balances his work life with marathon running, time with his family and time on the course.
Work-life balance is important for doctors who contact Your Doctor Jobs - many want a role that will enable them to better balance their career with travelling or spending more time at home with the family. It is this commitment to working flexibly that Justin applies to his staff.
''It's all about judging someone on output, not input. We are a small team - but we all work bloody hard. If I know someone can knock out their work in 6-7 hours, they can head home with their head high. If you take a little longer to do it, so be it, we can support you in that. Basically, it's about throwing the clock out and letting people work in a way that suits them.''
Finding a fulfilling role that balances work with 'me-time' is vital for doctors - Justin lives that life too. When he's not working, he can be found on the beach with his family, training for marathons or on one of Tasmania's 94 golf courses.
''I'm a bit rusty right now - I need to get out a bit before my big tourno after Christmas. The trick is to make the time to practice. Keeping yourself active in your home life will rub off on your business''.
